With a baby on the way, it is time to think about converting a room to become the nursery. While it may take a stretch of the imagination to figure out how a study can become a cozy haven for the new arrival, try picturing it without the grown-up furniture.
Consider hiring a custom remodeling company. They will likely have a virtual software program that allows the homeowner to get a better idea of what will fit where in the baby's room. Take measurements of the length, width and height. Include all oddities, like recessed corners and wall protrusions. Factor in all wall and ceiling fixtures, as well as any pipes, closets, windows and doors.
Crib Dresser Combo
Furniture
Get an idea of how big the crib and diaper changing table will be by checking out some baby furniture online or seeing what the interior designer might suggest. There will need to be a dresser and a toy chest, perhaps a rocking chair. There should be enough room to walk about and, when the child is old enough to crawl, plenty of room for that on the floor.
Flooring
Flooring is a big consideration. Carpeting should be soft and comfortable for bare feet, something that Mom and Dad can sit down on with a blanket. There are many different types available on the market. Choose a color and texture that suits a little one, but will go with other décor when the toddler gets older and the rest of the room's furnishings need to be updated.
Walls
Walls are perhaps the most fun to decorate. Choose from paneling, wall paper and paint - or a combination of them. Use wall borders to enhance the theme of the room. Tapestries, wall hangings and bright, fun characters make the nursery warm and inviting.
Windows
Window treatments should match the theme of the rest of the furniture and walls. Use blinds to control how much light can come into the room. Long windows might suggest vertical blinds. Standard windows will work better with mini-blinds or regular horizontal blinds. Finding curtains and draperies to match the rest of the room's theme is fairly easy. The hard part is deciding which ones to choose. There are so many possibilities that is may take great debate and discussion. Use swatches and pictures. Check out the offerings available through an interior designer.
Lighting
Be sure to use a minimum of three different lights in the room. One should be a nightlight for minimal illumination while the baby is sleeping. A concentrated light, such as a lamp that matches the rest of the theme, is helpful for occasional brightness or to look at things closely. An overhead fixture is ideal for everyday use and comes in a variety of designs best turned on and off by a light switch.
